2017 Fishing Reports

A big THANK YOU to American Crappie Trail/ Matt & Angie Morgan! What a great turnout for the first year run. The bucksaw team couldn’t say enough great things about how organized and professionally done it was. A lot of great response from the anglers and also how the fish we released back to the lake to be caught another time.  Date– 08/14/17                                                Lake Level– 709.01

Water Temp– 79°                                           Water Clarity– Stained

Discharge– 16000 cfs/ through the turbine

Crappie–  The crappie bite has been on the main flats fishing in 9+ feet of water fishing 7 to 10 feet deep. Minnows and jigs have both been working well.

Catfish–  The blue catfish bite is good on cut shad. Fish 6-10 feet deep on jugs in the flats and channel breaks on the upper Grand River arm.

Bass– The bass have been on the main lake points and flats around flooded bushes. Use buzz baits early and switch to square bills and spinnerbaits while the sun is up.

White Bass/ Hybrids– The white bass and hybrids are being caught with crankbaits on windblown points and humps.

Discharge– 16000 cfs/ through the turbine

Crappie–  The crappie bite has slowed a little due to rising water conditions but limits can still be caught. Fish the main lake flats in 10 to 18 feet of water fishing 10 to 14 feet deep. Minnows and jigs have both been working. Slow down and be patient.

Catfish–  The blue catfish bite is good on cut shad. Fish 6-10 feet deep on jugs in the flats and channel breaks on the upper Grand River arm.

Bass– Fish main lake points and secondary points with Buzz baits early and switch to square bills and jigs after the sun comes up. Stay on the move.

White Bass/ Hybrids– Fish the main lake points and flats with crankbaits and big rooster tails and fish the humps with spoons.

Crappie–  The crappie bite has been good!!! Fish main lake flats in 12 to 18 feet of water fishing 8 to 12 feet deep. Minnows have been working very well.

Catfish–  The blue catfish bite is good on cut shad. Fish 6-10 feet deep on jugs in the flats and channel breaks on the upper Grand River arm.

Bass– Fish the main lake flats and points. Use square bills and big worms and cover a lot of water.

White Bass/ Hybrids– Fish the humps and flats. Spoons and big rooster tails have been working great. Have been seeing good surface activity early and late.

Discharge– 500 cfs/ through the turbine

Crappie– Crappie bite has been great all week!!! Fish the main lake flats. Fish in 9 to 20 feet of water and fish 8 to 12 feet deep. Minnows and jigs have both been working well.

Catfish–  Blue cats are good drifting and with jugs on the main lake flats in 9-15 ft. of water using fresh cut shad.

Bass– Bass, use buzz baits early on main lake flats. Switch to 10 in. worm after the sun gets up.

White Bass/ Hybrids– White bass/hybrids, fish walking top water baits early morning and before dark. Look for surface activity on the flats and points. Switch to rooster tails and rattle traps during the middle of the day. We have seen a lot of fish come in this week. The bite has been very good!

Discharge– 250 cfs/ through the turbine

Crappie– The crappie bite is still very good! Fish the main lake flats in 12-20 ft. of water. Fish 7-10 ft. early and go to 10-12 ft. deep after the sun comes up. Minnows and jigs have both been working well.

Catfish–  Bluecat are good drifting and with jugs on the main lake flats in 9-15 ft. of water using fresh cut shad.

Bass– Fish the main lake points early with buzz baits. When the sun comes up move to the main lake flats and switch to square bills.

White Bass/ Hybrids– White bass and hybrids are on main lake and humps. Troll crankbaits and rattle traps or look for surface activity and cast rattle traps or big rooster tails. The bite has been very good.

Crappie– The crappie bite is still very good! Fish the flats in 15-21 ft. of water fishing 14 ft. down. Minnows have been working very well.

Catfish–  Bluecat are good drifting and with jugs on the main lake flats in 9-15 ft. of water using fresh cut shad.

Bass– Bass have been on the main lake points. Fish a buzz bait or a spinner bait early and switch to a football jig or a Carolina rig when the sun comes up.

White Bass/ Hybrids– White bass and hybrids have been on main lake and humps also. Fish rattle traps and crank baits as well as sassy shad.

Crappie– The crappie bite has been very good! Fish the flats in 10-25 ft. of water fishing 10-12 ft. down. Minnows have been working very well.

Catfish–  Bluecat bite is good using fresh cut shad on the main lake flats in 8-13 ft. of water.

Bass– Fish the main lake points. Use buzz baits early and switch to a football jig with a low profile trailer as soon as the sun comes up.

White Bass/ Hybrids– White bass and hybrids have been on main lake humps and points. Use spoons or crankbaits for bait.

Crappie– The bite is really good! Fish the flats in 18-22 ft. of water fishing 12 ft. deep. Use black/ chartreuse jigs and/ or minnows.

Catfish– The fishing is going very well! Fish upstream in the grand arm or Hay Creek using fresh shad.

Bass– No report.

White Bass– Fish the main lake points and humps using spoons or live shad.

The fishing has been slow due to high water. The water is dropping slowly and we are hoping that the fishing will we back to normal as soon as the water drops a little more.

Crappie– Fish the flats in 10-20 ft. of water fishing 8-10 ft. down using minnows. Also being caught in the willows fishing in 11-12 ft. of water fishing 10 ft. down.

Catfish– Fish the trees in 20 ft. of water fishing 18 ft. deep with live gold fish or cut shad.

Bass– The bass are spawning in the creeks! Fish with white spinner baits, square bills & flip bushes with tubes baits.

White Bass– Fish the windy flats and humps. Use jigging spoons, rattle traps or slow troll crank baits.

Crappie– Spawning bite! Fish in 2-4 ft. of water fishing 18 inches down with a bobber using a black & chartreuse or blue & white jig.

Catfish– Fish the trees in 10-12 ft. of water fishing 5-6 ft. deep with gold fish.

Bass– The bass are spawning in the creeks! Fish with white spinner baits, square bills & flip bushes with tubes baits.

White Bass– Fish the windy flats and humps. Use jigging spoons, rattle traps or slow troll crank baits.

Discharge– 16,000 cfs/ through the turbine

Crappie– Fish 2-6 ft. from the banks fishing 2-3 ft. down using black & chartreuse jigs, chartreuse or pearl/white jigs. Fish the creeks in about 6-15 ft. of water, fishing 6-10 ft. deep spider rigging and using minnows for bait.

Catfish– Fish the timber 10-15 ft. deep with cut shad for blue cats and gold fish or blue gill for flat head.

Bass– Fish the main lake points with crank baits. The bass are also starting to show up in the creeks, use square bills or jigs for bait.

White Bass– Use rattle traps on the main lake points & creeks.

Discharge– 3300 cfs/ through the turbine

Crappie– Fish early in the morning (7-9 am) and later in the evening (4-dark) on the banks in 2 ft. of water using a slip bobber. Fish the mouths of the creeks between 9-4 pm in about 20-25 ft. of water, fishing 10-17 ft. deep spider rigging and using minnows for bait.

Catfish– Fish the timber 10-15 ft. deep with cut shad for blue cats and gold fish or blue gill for flat head.

Bass– Fish the back of the creeks using a white spinner bait, white trailer and a #5 Colorado single blade.

Crappie– Fish the creeks in 20-30 ft. of water, fishing 15 ft. deep spider rigging and using minnows for bait.

Bass– Fish the main lake points using crank baits.

White Bass– Fish the main lake points using crank bait & rattle traps.

Crappie- Fish the mouths of the creeks about 3/4 of the way back into the creeks spider rigging. Fish in 15 ft. of water, fishing 6-12 ft. deep using minnows for bait.

Catfish– Drift the flats with cut shad.

Bass– Fish the main lake points using wiggle warts for bait.

White Bass– Fish the main lake points using crank bait & rattle traps.

Discharge– 133 cfs

Crappie- Fish the mouths of the creeks about 3/4 of the way back into the creeks spider rigging. Fish in 12-19 ft. of water, fishing 8-11 ft. deep using minnows for bait.

Catfish– Fish the flats with shad.

Bass– Fish the creeks and pockets using black and blue jigs and white spinner baits. The bass fishing is fair.
